Chianti Castaldo: A Riserva in the Heart of Tuscany
Chianti is a historic Tuscan designation—so iconic, in fact, that it has almost become a synonym for the region itself. It identifies an entire wine-growing area stretching between the provinces of Siena and Florence. As an ancient symbol of our land and an instantly recognizable label, we at Carpineto fully honor this legacy with a truly great wine: Chianti Castaldo.
First, a brief distinction: our vineyards are located in the area between Castellina in Chianti and San Casciano in Val di Pesa, a premier sub-region for this designation. This area is distinct from its "twin" appellation, Chianti Classico. The difference? Chianti covers a broader territory compared to the ancient "Classico" core. Nevertheless, both rely on the grape that represents Tuscany to the world: Sangiovese. According to production regulations, it must make up at least 70% of the blend for Chianti and 80% for Chianti Classico, often complemented by other authorized local varieties.
In short, Chianti has always been the wine that identifies Tuscan (and Italian) viticulture in every corner of the globe. At Carpineto, we chose to pair this renowned name with "Castaldo." Why? To fully honor our region’s historical identity. The Castaldo was once the King’s trusted representative—the man who managed the royal estates, a figure we would today call a "land steward" or fattore. We chose this name precisely because of this ancient, legal, and profound bond with the land.
After all, what better way to name a wine (and a grape variety) so deeply rooted in the culture and identity of an entire territory? A wine that expresses both, especially in the glass. Our Chianti Castaldo, produced as a Riserva, is a bottle of great elegance and balance. Following aging in wooden barrels of various sizes for a period of 8 to 10 months, it pours a brilliant ruby red—a result of the high concentration of anthocyanins in the Sangiovese grapes, those natural pigments that gift our Chianti Castaldo its wonderful color.
On the nose, the glass offers intense, broad, and persistent aromas. One is immersed in a bouquet of red fruits and floral notes ranging from iris to violet, seamlessly blended with hints of toasted aromas—such as vanilla—derived from its time in oak. It is here that Chianti Castaldo reveals its full complexity, paired with a delightful freshness.
On the palate, we discover a beautiful smoothness combined with a good body and structure. It is persistent yet vibrant, offering a "snappy" drinkability that doesn't sacrifice depth of flavor. Chianti Castaldo is the perfect wine to enjoy with friends during a relaxing evening, without compromising on complexity. It is a wine destined to make your moments together truly unforgettable.
