London, October 28th, The Carpineto winemaker, Giovanni Carlo Sacchet, is awarded the 2003 Trophy for Best Italian Wine Producer at the 34th International Wine and Spirits Competition.
The Carpineto winemaker and partner, Giovanni Carlo Sacchet, a 30-plus year veteran of Tuscan winemaking, was awarded the Trophy for Best Italian Wine Producer at the 34th International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. According to David Wrigley MW, chair of the competition’s Technical and Judging Committee, ”the competition boasts the most highly qualified group of international judges of any wine and spirit competition in the world.”
Giovanni Carlo Sacchet is originally from the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region, a mountainous area at the northeast corner of Italy. After graduating from the School of Enology in Conegliano he moved to Tuscany where he has contributed to the Tuscan wine Renaissance. “When we started Carpineto, over 30 years ago, our objective was to invest in what was then state-of-the-art equipment such as stainless steel tanks, refrigeration, small oak barrels and so on. We knew that it was possible to make wines of structure, color and concentration that far exceeded the standards of the time, but we also knew that in order to obtain high quality wines we had to start improving the vineyards, some had to be replanted from scratch,” continues Sacchet.
Founded in 1967, Carpineto exports to 41 countries. Vineyards and olive trees are planted on four estates totaling 424 hectares (1,020 acres): - Dudda, Greve in Chianti (Chianti Classico) - Chianciano and Montepulciano (Vino Nobile) - Gaville, in the Upper Valdarno on the eastern edge of Chianti Classico - Gavorrano, in Maremma within the Monteregio DOC
“It was destiny that we should meet in Tuscany” states Giovanni Carlo Sacchet, “today Carpineto is a synergistic 30 person team that shares the same high standards for quality, ethics and dedication to customer satisfaction. In addition we have the added benefit of having an enthusiastic family member in charge of each key job in the company, from winemaking to accounting to sales and marketing.”
Giovanni Carlo Sacchet lives with his wife, Daniela, their two daughters, Caterina and Elisabetta, in a home near the Gaville estate, on a hillside overlooking the Chianti hills and the Valdarno Superiore valley.
